The Hobbit Trailor in High Frame Rate Conversion

Luke Letellier has released an edited version of The Hobbit trailer running at 48fps to give you an idea of what it will look like in theaters. With the use of software, Luke has taken the original 24fps trailer and added a new frame between each existing frame to create the HFR (High Frame Rate) version.

While I can say that I am impressed with his final product, seeing The Hobbit at 48fps makes me wonder if I will like the official version running at the same rate. It doesn’t look like film anymore, and instead reminds me of video pulled from a prosumer camcorder running in interlaced mode. Judging from other reviews online, it appears I am not alone. Todd McCarthy from The Hollywood Reporter sums it up best:

everything takes on an overblown, artificial quality in which the phoniness of the sets and costumes becomes obvious, while well-lit areas bleed into their surroundings, like watching a high-end homemovie.
